''I've had asthma since the age of 7. It frustrates me because I'm fit, I keep my self in shape, I lead a healthy lifestyle. That said, my asthma often makes me feel like a tired, frail old man gasping for breath as I reach the top of a small flight of stairs. In January this year (2006)- after holidaying in South Africa - my asthma became acutely bad. I was using Ventolin on the hour, every hour. I was waking up four or five times a night, fending off major attacks. I was feeling increasingly scared and increasingly aware of my own mortality. My asthma was so bad I had to - literally - stand on my head to help drain my lungs of the fluid that the inflamed tissue was producing.

I was not in a good place.

One of my friends recommended Alastair and the Bowen Technique. Initially I was very sceptical, the treatment seemed too vague to be effective. Still I really was desperate and so I went along for my first session. I arrived puffing, wheezing, panting.

I won't go into the treatment as I won't do it justice. However, what I will say though is how fantastic I felt as I began to, literally, feel my chest relax, open up and settle down after only 20 minutes of treatment. It was as if, like an old car engine, my chest was in bad need of re-tuning and the Bowen Technique was in fact retuning the energy channels around my upper body. By the time I finished the first treatment, my chest was still sore, but I could breathe deeply again for the first time in over four weeks. Four weeks later I went back for my second treatment. My asthma was still bad but I had improved massively. Once again I was so impressed on how immediate the relief was. This time we worked on my sinuses as well as my asthma. The feeling of clarity in both my lungs and my sinuses was just fantastic.

What's great about the Bowen Technique is the fact that you can learn techniques to help prevent attacks or ease the condition. For the first time in my life I am not 100% dependent on drugs. I still use my Pulmicort inhaler twice a day but, you know what, I only use my Ventolin about 2 times a week - remember, I was using it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and then some.

I still have a few more sessions of Bowen ahead of me but I promise you, my sense of liberation and optimism that I now have as a result of this treatment is staggering. I am getting better. I really feel it. And that's after struggling with asthma for 31 years, I now look forward to the day when I can say 'Oh Ventolin, I used to be addicted to that!'
